From Pachinko’s Pot to My Pot: Kkori Gomtang from Woomijip in Seoul

In Pachinko, kkori gomtang appears in a family kitchen. In Seoul today, I brought a restaurant’s oxtail soup home and put it back on my own stove.

A pot of oxtail soup appears in Pachinko. Decades later, I carried another one home through Seoul.

There is something strikingly ordinary about the food in Pachinko. It never feels as though it has been placed there simply to decorate a scene. Rice is cooked, soup simmers, and people feed one another because that is part of everyday family life.

SHORT ANSWER
Can you experience Pachinko’s kkori gomtang in Seoul today?

Not as a literal recreation of the soup in the drama. But restaurants such as Woomijip in Yeonnam still put oxtail at the center of a Korean meal. Its kkori gomtang can be eaten at the restaurant or taken home to heat in your own kitchen.

01 · THE PLACE

Woomijip, at the quieter edge of Yeonnam

Woomijip sits in Yeonnam-dong, a little beyond the busiest streets around Hongdae. Its Korean name, 우미집, uses the characters 牛尾集 — a name that points directly to the restaurant’s specialty: oxtail.

The restaurant describes itself with the phrase “예스러운 맛, 멋스러운 공간” — roughly, “old flavors, stylish space.” Once you are there, the description makes sense. It does not feel like an old-fashioned soup shop, but neither does it hide its traditional roots behind a polished modern interior.

02 · BRINGING IT HOME

The restaurant bowl becomes a take-home meal

This was the part I enjoyed most. Instead of letting the experience end at the restaurant, I took a pack of Woomijip’s kkori gomtang home with me.

The hard work had already been done. The oxtail was cooked and the broth was ready. At home, all I had to do was thaw it, tip it into a pot and let it come to a good boil.

03 · BACK ON THE STOVE

Then the soup returns to a pot

The instructions are refreshingly simple: thaw the soup, transfer it to a pot, heat it through and finish with a good boil. No elaborate preparation, no long list of ingredients.

04 · FROM SUNJA’S POT TO MINE

The circumstances change. The pot remains.

In the Episode 1 screenplay of Apple TV+’s Pachinko, older Sunja has a large stockpot of kkori gomtang in her Osaka kitchen.

Of course, the pot on my stove in Seoul was not Sunja’s pot. Woomijip is not recreating her recipe, and I was not trying to do that either.

Still, when the broth began to bubble, I thought about that scene again. Different city, different time, different kitchen — and once again, there was oxtail soup in a pot, waiting to be served.

PLAYING KITCHEN NOTE
The circumstances change.
The pot remains.

Pachinko was where the thought began. Woomijip brought it back to present-day Seoul. I carried the soup home, put it on the stove and ate it at my own table. A very old dish had made a very ordinary modern journey.

FAQ

Kkori Gomtang in Seoul

What is kkori gomtang?

Kkori gomtang (꼬리곰탕) is a Korean oxtail soup. The tail is cooked slowly until the meat turns tender and the broth takes on the richness of the bones, meat and connective tissue.

Is kkori gomtang the same as seolleongtang?

No. They belong to the same broad family of Korean beef soups, but kkori gomtang is built specifically around oxtail. Seolleongtang is better known for its long-simmered beef bones and pale, cloudy broth.

Does Pachinko actually mention kkori gomtang?

The television adaptation does. In the Episode 1 screenplay, the pot in older Sunja’s Osaka kitchen is specifically identified as kkori gomtang. The original novel has a separate seolleongtang scene, so the two references should not be mixed together.

Where is Woomijip in Seoul?

Woomijip Yeonnam is at 153-9 Seongmisan-ro in Mapo-gu, in the Yeonnam-dong neighborhood near Hongdae.

Can you take Woomijip kkori gomtang home?

Yes. I brought home the packaged kkori gomtang shown in this article, thawed it, poured it into a pot and brought it back to a boil before serving.
