Why Korean Movies Love Samgyeopsal, Soju and Korean BBQ |
Why Samgyeopsal and Soju Keep Appearing in Korean Movies
Samgyeopsal and soju appear so naturally in Korean movies because they already belong to real Korean life.
Friends, coworkers and families gather around one Korean BBQ grill, cook together, pour drinks for one another and stay at the table long enough for conversation to change.
More Than Samgyeopsal and Soju
For Koreans, samgyeopsal and soju can mean more than pork and alcohol.
It can be dinner after a difficult day at work. A Friday night with old friends. A family meal. A celebration. A reconciliation. Or simply a night when nobody is quite ready to go home.
A surprising amount of Korean life can happen around one hot grill.
The Movies Did Not Invent This Table
The familiar combination of Korean BBQ and soju was not invented for the movies. Korean cinema simply found a powerful storytelling space in a table that already existed.
Unlike individual plates, a tabletop grill gives everyone something in common. The heat is in the middle. The food is in the middle. And for a while, everyone has to remain around the same table.
A Korean BBQ Table Is Never Completely Still
This may be the most interesting thing about Korean BBQ on screen: the table is never completely still.
Someone puts meat on the grill. Someone turns it. Someone cuts it. Someone moves the kimchi. Someone notices an empty glass. Someone pours another drink.
For a filmmaker, those small movements are almost another language.
Look at the Hands, Not Just the Soju
When watching a Korean drinking scene, look at the hands, not just the green bottle.
Who pours first? Who receives the glass? Who notices that another person's glass is empty? And how formal or relaxed are those gestures?
Using both hands when pouring or receiving alcohol can express courtesy, especially toward an older person or someone being treated with respect. The exact position of the second hand can vary.
One Grill, Many Relationships
| At the Grill | Between People | On Screen |
|---|---|---|
| Turning the meat | Taking care of the shared meal | Attention |
| Offering a cooked piece | A small act of care | Closeness |
| Pouring soju | Giving and receiving | Respect or familiarity |
| Waiting around the grill | Time together | Conversation |
The Grill Changes, but the Table Remains Shared
Korean BBQ does not have just one type of grill. Restaurants use different cooking surfaces, including metal grills, cast-iron cauldron lids and stone plates.
A stone grill and a traditional sotttukkeong, or Korean cauldron lid, are different cooking surfaces. One should not be described simply as an evolution of the other.
What is more interesting here is what they can create: one broad surface where meat, kimchi and vegetables cook together while several people share the same heat.
Korean BBQ is broader than samgyeopsal. Different cuts, different grills and different regional styles can create very different tables.
Three Movies, Three Different Tables
This is where Korean movies become interesting. The same familiar grill can carry completely different emotions.
1. A Good Rain Knows — Romance Around the Grill
Hur Jin-ho's 2009 romance A Good Rain Knows reunites Dong-ha and May, two people who once knew each other as students and meet again years later in Chengdu. Old memories return, but so do feelings that were never completely settled.
Their Korean meal of samgyeopsal and soju works naturally inside that story. The grill gives them time. They eat, drink and remain together long enough for the distance between past and present to begin to soften.
2. Inside Men — Trust Around a Rougher Table
A Korean BBQ table can also do the opposite of romance. In Inside Men, a meal of grilled pork and soju becomes part of the changing relationship between men who begin from very different positions.
Outside the formal spaces of power, sitting around an ordinary grill changes the atmosphere. Eating and drinking together can create a temporary space where suspicion loosens and an alliance begins to feel possible.
3. Boomerang Family — Samgyeopsal as Family Food
Then there is Boomerang Family. Here, the grill is not mainly about romance or alliance. It is about family.
The dysfunctional siblings return to their mother's home, bringing disappointment, arguments and old resentment with them. Yet meals keep bringing the family back into the same physical space.
Repeated samgyeopsal meals become especially meaningful: they are messy, ordinary and communal, much like the family itself.
Same grill. Different relationships.
In A Good Rain Knows, the table helps romance return.
In Inside Men, it helps trust and alliance take shape.
In Boomerang Family, it keeps a difficult family eating together.
Maybe That Is Why We Recognize the Scene So Quickly
For a Korean viewer, a grill and a green soju bottle can carry context before a character says very much.
Something may be about to loosen. Someone may finally speak. A relationship may become warmer, more awkward, more honest or more complicated.
And Then Came Possible Love
And now there is another Korean barbecue table I want to watch more closely.
Lee Chang-dong's new film Possible Love has just won the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. It is the first Korean film to receive that particular Venice honor.
The film follows two married couples living very different lives: a laid-off worker and his wife, and a documentary filmmaker and her affluent husband. Their lives become intertwined, bringing questions of class, intimacy, ambition and love to the surface.
And among those complicated relationships is a scene that immediately caught my attention: Mi-ok and Ye-ji drinking soju over Korean barbecue.
Published reporting describes the scene as soju and Korean barbecue. So until I can verify exactly what is being cooked, I will not call the meat samgyeopsal.
But now I have another question. Why did Lee Chang-dong put these two women around this particular table?
Who pours the soju?
How do their hands move around the table?
When does the conversation become comfortable?
And when does the distance between them begin to show again?
The movies did not create this table. They recognized what was already happening around it.
Quick FAQ
Why do samgyeopsal and soju often appear together in Korean movies?
Because they already belong to familiar Korean social life. A shared grill creates time and interaction, making it a natural setting for relationships to develop on screen.
Is Korean BBQ the same as samgyeopsal?
No. Samgyeopsal is pork belly and is one of the best-known Korean BBQ foods, but Korean barbecue includes many different cuts of pork and beef.
Do Koreans always drink soju with samgyeopsal?
No. People also drink beer, somaek, non-alcoholic drinks or no alcohol at all. Soju is an iconic pairing, not a rule.
