I photographed Changdeokgung on a day when I had come to share food with friends.
I had prepared food for a gathering in a room overlooking the palace. Outside the window, tiled roofs overlapped, walls divided small courtyards, and trees rose between the buildings. That view is the personal starting point for this guide.

What feels different about the two palaces?
Gyeongbokgung was founded in 1395 as Joseon’s primary palace. Its gates and formal spaces offer a strong introduction to the public face of royal life. If you picture your first palace visit around a grand entrance and broad architectural views, this is where I would start.

At Changdeokgung, look at the buildings and landscape together. UNESCO highlights the way the palace complex responds to the natural terrain. It was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1997.
For a visitor, this suggests a different way of looking: a roof beyond a wall, trees around a building, and a view that changes as you walk.

Is the Secret Garden included?
Ordinary palace admission does not automatically include the Secret Garden. Treat the palace building area and Huwon (후원) as separate parts of your plan. If the garden is your main reason for visiting Changdeokgung, check its tickets and session times first.
창덕궁 전각 관람과 후원 관람은 구분해서 준비하셔야 합니다. 후원을 꼭 보고 싶으시다면 관람권과 회차부터 확인하고, 그 시간에 맞춰 나머지 일정을 정하시는 편이 좋습니다.
The official notice currently states that online booking opens at 10:00 a.m. Korea time, six days before your visit. Complete payment by the stated deadline. The Korean and English booking pages also have different payment-card requirements.

If online tickets are sold out, consult the official guidance for on-site availability. A visit to the ticket office does not guarantee a garden ticket. Without Huwon, you can still plan a visit around the palace buildings and courtyards.

Where can you see the royal guard ceremony?
If the guard ceremony is a priority, plan around Gyeongbokgung. The official programme lists the Changing of the Royal Palace Guard Ceremony at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., lasting about 20 minutes. Check the operating notice before travelling specifically for it: closures, weather and other conditions may affect the programme.

Gyeongbokgung normally closes on Tuesdays; Changdeokgung normally closes on Mondays. When a regular closing day falls on a public or substitute holiday, the official rules move the closure to the next non-holiday. Check your exact date before setting off.
일반적으로 경복궁은 화요일, 창덕궁은 월요일에 쉽니다. 정기휴궁일이 공휴일이나 대체공휴일과 겹치면 개방하고 그다음 첫 비공휴일에 쉬도록 안내되어 있습니다. 방문 날짜에 해당하는 공지를 확인해 주세요.

9~10월에는 두 궁궐 모두 일반 주간 관람이 오전 9시부터 오후 6시까지이며, 입장은 오후 5시에 마감합니다. 11월부터는 종료 시간이 달라집니다. 후원 회차와 특별 야간 프로그램은 이 시간표와 별도로 확인하셔야 합니다.
Which palace would I choose in autumn?
I would lean towards Changdeokgung if the relationship between trees and architecture is what interests you most, particularly if you can arrange the garden visit you want. If you would rather build your day around grand palace views and the guard ceremony, choose Gyeongbokgung.
Autumn is a reason to look more closely, but it is not a guarantee of colour on a particular date. The photographs here record the green foliage on the day they were taken, rather than autumn conditions.
